Situated a short distance from Durham, Brandon was originally one of seven townships within the Parish of Brancepeth. Brandon was confiscated by Elizabeth I in 1569 after the northern rising and administered the lands as Crown Lands until the 1620's where they were plundered by a series of Royal lessees and courtiers.
Its main industry was agricultural until coal was discovered. The town prospered until finally in 1968 the last coal mine in Brandon was closed.
